And Former Mt. SAC Relays Meet Director passes away

August 19, 2010 - It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Scott Davis (67) on the afternoon of August 18th, at his home in Cerritos (CA), after a long battle with cancer.

Scott was part of the Mt. SAC Family for over two decades. He served the Mt. SAC Relays first as the meets announcer and then as the full time Relays Director from 1997 to 2007. During his time as Relays Director, he moonlighted at Mt. SAC inspiring students as a very popular adjunct mathematics professor and spent time himself as a student in Japanese classes.

Scott had many interests including stamps, fine wine and Japan (especially sushi), but his greatest interest was in track and field where he possessed the knowledge and was the golden voice heard throughout the world. He traveled extensively announcing anything from local meets to world championships. He was the voice of major US competitions, NCAA Championships, USA National Championships, USA Olympic Trials and served as the English announcer at meets throughout the world.

His expertise as an announcer was equally matched by his knowledge of track and field statistics. Scott was the co-founder of the Federation of American Statisticians of Track (FAST) and annually produced the FAST Annual which serves as the statistical bible for USA Track and Field. He also was a founding member of the Track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA) and internationally was the Secretary General of the Association of Track and Field Statisticians (ATFS) since 1994.

A graduate of UCLA, he served his Alma Mater as the home track meet announcer for 28 years, as well as a member of the UCLA Football Stat Crew for over 20 years.

Scott is survived by his wife Cheryl and son Scott.

The College extends its deepest condolences to Scott’s family and friends.
