Hilmer was Mt. SAC's first track coach (in 1948). In 1959, he founded of the Mt. SAC Relays, and served as its leader until his retirement in 1963. Thanks to his foresight and inspiration, his dream of establishing on the West Coast a major relay meet of world class stature continues to this day.

His successful career as a coach was highlighted by a state championship and many conference titles. Hilmer also was the founder of the Mt. SAC Cross-Country Invitational which, like the Relays, is the largest meet of its kind in the nation.

Hilmer passed away in 1977.
