Profile

The Relays is proud to honor Rick Sloan as the Hall of Fame Inductee for 2006. Rick has been at Washington State University since 1973. He was an assistant at the school for 21 years prior to taking over the head position in 1994. And just prior to his long tenure in Pullman, Rick was an assistant right here at Mt. SAC during the academic year 1972-1973. The Mt. SAC head coach, Don Ruh, was on a sabbatical during that year and acting head coach John Norton worked with Rick as the main assistant ran the team during the 73 campaign. As head coach at WSU, Rick has directed a total of 27 Cougar athletes to NCAA Outdoor All-American status 46 times.

Rick had a very successful career as an athlete. He finished seventh in the Olympic decathalon in Mexico City in 1968 and was ranked second in that event in the United States in 1968 and 1969. He was the captain for the UCLA Bruins as a senior in 1969 and during that year became only the fourth American to exceed 8000 points in the decathalon. While he was competing, Rick held the decathalon world record in the high jump at 6-11 3/4 and also in the pole vault at 16-7.

Rick has always supported the Mt. SAC Relays and considers his trips to Walnut a homecoming. He has brought his Cougar teams to compete in Walnut almost every year during his reign as head coach and has seen his athletes compete very well at Lodge stadium. It is with great pleasure that we induct Rick into the Coaches Hall of Fame.
