Art was America's best triple jumper in the late 1960s. He bounded to four consecutive Mt. SAC titles, and established a meet record which stood until 1976.

Art raised the American record three times, adding over a foot to the previous record. He captured three national championships, and just missed winning a medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where he finished fourth.
